Dear Rockers,
The upcoming Nashville camp, February 28-March 3, 2019, celebrates one of the biggest rock groups of all-time: JOURNEY! The legendary band’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members JONATHAN CAIN (keyboards/songwriting) and STEVE SMITH (drums) will share their insider stories about the music industry, and you’ll get to jam with them both at the private Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp facility plus perform with Steve LIVE at one of Nashville’s hottest clubs, The Mercy Lounge!
Here are some things you may not know about this legendary rock band JOURNEY:
1. Before they settled on the name of Journey, they were known as The Golden Gate Rhythm Section
2. What Journey song reportedly inspired Kansas' "Carry on Wayward Son"?
I'm Gonna Leave You
The main riff of "Carry on Wayward Son" does have some similarities to Journey's 1976 track "I'm Gonna Leave You". Guitarist George Tickner co-wrote the song with the band, but left the band before Journey recorded the song.
3. What year did Jonthan Cain join Journey?
1980-Jonathan Cain replaced Gregg Rolie, who had become tired of touring with the band. Rolie recommended Cain, of the group The Babys for the new keyboardist. Cain's use of synthesizers created a whole new sound for Journey. He proved to be a great addition to Journey, and co-wrote all the songs on Journey's 1981 album "Escape".
4. Which Journey song had the highest position on the US Billboard Hot 100?
It was "Open Arms", released January of 1982, it was their highest charting single. It hit the Billboard Top 40 and peaked at #2 for six consecutive weeks only to be denied the #1 position by "Centerfold" by the J. Geils Band and "I Love Rock And Roll" by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts.
5. In 2008, Journey had the first song released before the digital era to reach two million in digital sales and become the first most downloaded catalog song in iTunes history. What was the song?
Don't Stop Believing
In 2008, Journey had an apparent resurgence. They licensed "Don't Stop Believing" for various TV appearances, including the series finale of "The Sopranos". Twenty-seven years after its release on the 1981 album "Escape", they had the best selling catalog song in iTunes history. A catalog song is iTunes terminology for a track that was recorded before the digital era.
6. Which song do you hear Rodney Dangerfield jamming to on the golf course in the movie, "Caddyshack?"
Anyway You Want It
7. What song hit number two on the Billboard Top 100 and was almost left off its respective album?
Open Arms
"Escape" was the first album to feature Jonathan Cain. He wrote the melody to "Open Arms" while he was with The Babys, but according to John Waite, frontman for The Babys, the melody was "sentimental rubbish". When Cain joined Journey, he finished writing the song with Steve Perry. The band nearly didn't include it on the album, because according to Neil Schon "it was so far removed from anything [Journey] had ever attempted to record before".
8. Who was drummer Steve Smith playing for immediately before he was asked to join Journey?
Montrose
Perry and Schon saw Steve Smith performing with with guitarist Ronnie Montrose and his group, who were touring with Journey in 1978 on the "Infinity" Tour. Smith also had previously played with jazz-fusion violinist Ponty. Steve Smith was already a fan of Journey's music, owning some of their albums.
9. Journey published two songs on the "Tron" soundtrack, a 1982 science fiction film, after what band pulled out of the project?
Supertramp
Journey contributed "Only Solutions" and "1990's Theme" to the soundtrack. For years, due to tape deterioration, the songs were never mastered digitally, although they have since been digitally mastered. Journey has never released either track outside of their "Tron" soundtrack appearance. Supertramp was originally contracted for the contributions.
10. Immediately before joining Journey, what was Steve Perry's day job?
Working on a farm
Steve left his band, Alien Project, dejected after the bass player died and ten years' of efforts to make it in music. He was working on a farm and playing in clubs at night when he got a phone call from Journey's manager.
We are also thrilled to welcome guitarist extraordinaire NUNO BETTENCOURT to our Nashville camp. Nuno may be best-known as the lead guitarist for the Boston rock band EXTREME—as well as the co-writer of their massive hit, “More Than Words”—but he has also toured with Rihanna, teamed up with Jane’s Addiction front person Perry Farrell in Satellite Party, and was one of the five absolutely fierce guitar stars in Steve Vai’s Generation Axe 2018.
This camp also features FRANK HANNON and BRIAN WHEAT from TESLA, the Sacramento, California melodic hard-rock quintet that has sold more than 25 million albums.
